The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
