England midfielder Jordan Henderson admits he has encountered "difficult moments" after departing from Liverpool for Saudi Arabia and says he might "have made different decisions".

The veteran midfielder received backlash for exiting Liverpool in 2023 to join Al-Ettifaq in a nation where LGBTQ+ relationships are illegal.

Henderson had formerly been a prominent supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and expressed regret for letting down or offending people in the community members when he departed from Saudi Arabia to join Ajax following a six-month period.

International Selection and Reflections

Henderson was left out of Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad but is back to the Premier League with Brentford and England's selection under Thomas Tuchel.

"I don't think it was the cause why I didn't make the Euros," Henderson stated. "While I was in Saudi I think I was in each gathering leading up to the Euros."

"Timing-wise, with the situation in looking back, yes - perhaps I would have taken different decisions."

"But at the period that's how I felt and the decision I made was for numerous reasons and I alone know the rationale."

Personal Challenges

"To be honest, over the past few years I have had some tough moments. It felt like a break-up when I left Liverpool."

"Certainly I'm not flawless and I've made mistakes in the past. Certainly I will have throughout my career."

"But all I've ever tried to do is the correct thing."

International Career

Henderson has won 85 caps since making his England debut against France in 2010.

He is in Tuchel's squad to compete against Wales and Latvia this week and believes he still has a lot to contribute on the pitch.

"The crucial people are the head coach, the coaching staff and the players and what they believe," said Henderson.

"Question them what they think, if I am a motivator when I am here. I don't believe one of the best managers in Europe would be picking me just to do that."
