🔗 Share this article 2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Year of the Croaking Craze. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games. A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim. The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their popularity has markedly increased in recent times. A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures. Tracking the Tadpole Trend To grasp this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots. The findings tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025. This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming appears especially pronounced. Designing for a Sticky Tongue In my opinion, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers. Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game. Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a host of unique mechanics. Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer. What the Future Holds So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far. Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we might just be on the verge of a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
